Boat Design Process Description

The design process is divided into several phases:

·         Pre-Design

We base our quote and deliverables on these phases as described below.

The design process begins with the client outlining their wishes for the boat: its appearance, layout, performance, required structural details, etc.—in other words, the concept that he has in mind. The client's initial requirements are reviewed and summarised. Preliminary specifications, rough general arrangement plan and Statement of Requirements are prepared.

These documents serve as a starting point for the Concept Design.

Deliverables Phase 1 – Pre-Design:

·         Pre-Design Specifications

Conceptual design work begins on the basis of the Statement of Requirements developed at the Pre-Design phase. The purpose of Concept Design is to define the appearance of the boat and to prove that the boat design is feasible.

3D model of the boat is developed and optimised for appearance and performance. Perspective views from various angles are provided. General arrangement plan and preliminary hull construction plan are developed to integrate the boat's structure with the accommodations. Preliminary weight estimation, hydrostatics calculation and performance analyses are performed to ensure the viability of the boat concept. An analysis of compliance with regulatory requirements is being conducted to confirm that the boat concept meets applicable safety rules and standards.

The Concept Design package will be presented for client review and comments, and all client requests will be incorporated before completion of the Concept Design phase.

During this Concept Design phase, the designer and client interaction is most important, since at the end of this phase the design will be frozen. "Frozen" means that the size, configuration, powering, structure, general arrangement, and all major equipment will have been defined. The subsequent design phases are for the purpose of preparing detailed engineering drawings and calculations for construction.

The Concept Design is sufficiently detailed to enable a competent yard to prepare preliminary boat building cost estimate.

·         Brief Specification and Major Equipment List

Technical Design phase is based on the client's approved Concept Design, and any client requested changes to the design after this phase commences will be billed as an added contract cost. Changes are not easy to incorporate once Technical Design begins.

In this last phase, the final drawings for construction are being prepared. The equipment list and specifications are refined and finalized. Hull lines are faired. All hull structures are engineered to meet requirements of ISO standards and/or Classification society rules. The final hull, deck, and superstructure construction drawings are produced. The weight summary, hydrostatics, and stability calculations are updated. The performance predictions and powering calculations are refined and finalized. Final engineering calculations are performed. Final machinery and systems drawings are produced.

The Technical Design is ready for submission to Classification societies and regulatory authorities.

The following percentage distribution is used as a guideline for determining the design fee:

·         Pre-Design phase — 15% of the total cost of design work;

·         Concept Design phase — 25% of the total cost of design work;

·         Technical Design phase — 60% of the total cost of design work.

1) Pre-Design - 50% down payment to get started and 50% upon completion of the Phase prior to delivery of results of work;

2) Concept Design - 50% down payment to get started and 50% upon completion of the Phase prior to delivery of results of work;

3) Technical Design - 50% down payment to get started and 50% upon completion of the Phase prior to delivery of results of work.

The Copyright to the Design and any derivative work will remain solely the property of the Designer – Valeriy Berezovsky. All the design documentation as an instrument of service will remain exclusive intellectual property of the Designer. The design set cannot be resold, transferred or exposed to any third parties (excerpt certification bodies) in printed or electronic form without the written permission of the Designer. The design documentation may not be printed or copied other than for purposes of workshop use or certification.

The Client will grant to build one single boat using the design documentation. Permission to build a second boat using the same design documentation can only be obtained by first obtaining the written consent of the Designer and by payment for the building rights.

The Design fee payable for a Limited Series Building is calculated as follows:

·         For the first execution – 100% of the Total Design fee;

·         For the second execution – 50% of the Total Design fee payable for the first execution;

·         For each subsequent execution – 20% of the Total Design fee payable for the first execution.

The Design fee payable for an Unlimited Series Building is 5xTotal Design fee.

Should the Client desire Exclusive Building Rights, then the Design fee will be higher than fee for Unlimited Series Building Rights. It shall be determined by mutual agreement, subject to the expected production.
